Mission Statement: Costa Rica Entomological Supply (CRES) was inspired by E.F. Schumacher’s book, “Small is Beautiful, Economics as if People Mattered.” Through CRES’ efforts, butterfly farming in Costa Rica became an applied experiment in Schumacher’s vision. For 25 years butterfly farming has generated ecologically benign, rural based employment for many families. Rising standards of living and the preservation of many natural habitats alone though have fallen short of a true model of sustainability. CRES continues as an ongoing experiment for realizing a business model for proper stewardship of the planet. |

Spirogyra is a Butterfly farm located ten minutes walk of Central Avenue of San Jose, Costa Rica's capital. One of our goals is to keep this area, located in the last forested part of the city as a "green oasis' with a beatifull exhibition Garden where people can learn about butterflies, how to breed them in captivity and know about their role in the environment becoming sensitive and more aware of the importance of preserving one's habitat.
A self-guided trail system through the rest of the farm help illustrate the importance of preserving the local ecology. The farm overlooks the neighboring Simon Bolivar Zoo across the River Torres and both areas are important with natural forest habitats that serves not only as a natural air filter and oxygen producer for the city, but a refuge for a variety of birds, reptiles, amphibians, small mammals and insects, including of course butterflies.
Spirogyra, export abroad PUPAE of some 20 different species and is also agent for a number of independent breeders. Many of these, are groups of peasants from small rural communities on the fringe of the natural rainforest, where there is a constant pressure on undisturbed areas to be cleared for lumber and traditional farming. Our goal in these communities is to provide an alternative of means by using ecologically valuable land as a source of income while maintaining a minimum impact on the ecosystem. |

Mission Statement: To protect and recover Salvadorian wildlife as populations that are viable in the long term (most especially butterflies), develop and implement technologies that will allow for their sustainable use, and contribute to the efforts required for obtaining knowledge that will allow El Salvador to know, appreciate, protect and use its natural biological resources.
Conservation Efforts: Bioproductores de El Salvador manages a nature reserve together with 2 neighbours (in total, just over 300 acres) next to El Salvador’s most important national park in terms of Biodiversity (the El Imposible National Park) in southwestern El Salvador, near the border with Guatemala. With 9 full time wardens covering 24 hour 365 days-a-year custody, this area is probably the most intensely protected natural area in El Salvador. Support provided to major national and international research efforts (inventories, life cycles, etc.) has lead to many new reports of plants and animals for this country, and the recovery, entrance and even breeding of several species locally considered as highly endangered and threatened has been an increasingly observed phenomenon in the private reserve that surrounds the farm. Likewise, adequate plants have been established in certain, restricted areas of the reserve so that local colonies of butterflies of interest have become established, ensuring complete independence from the park – population, though of course not genetic wise. Major efforts are currently being undertaken to study and replicate (at ground level) the ecology and annual cycle of canopy communities of butterflies (i.e.: in this case, butterflies that rarely come down to ground level)
